The moment has arrived. You’re getting ready to set out and finally see the Big 5 (lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants and rhinos) in their natural habitat. This is no trip to the zoo, so you want to be fully prepared to absorb every drop of this once in a lifetime experience.

The basics

Here’s what you need to know about your safari in Africa…

  • Game drives usually occur in the early hours of the morning as well as in the afternoon and evening. Get a good night’s sleep and take advantage of afternoon rest time so you’re refreshed and ready for action.
  • There’s no denying the majesty of the Big 5, but don’t forget to give smaller creatures like birds, insects, reptiles and rodents their due admiration.
  • Look around and appreciate the vast and beautiful landscapes in between animal sightings.
  • Put your camera down for a moment and just be. Take a deep breath. Let the sounds, smells and sights wash over you. Commit them all to memory so that you can come back whenever you want.

You can’t get the most out of your safari if you’re not prepared with a few must-haves to make your excursion comfortable.

Here’s what you need to bring…

  • Take your camera equipment, but travel as lightly as possible. Pack plenty of batteries, extra memory cards, and one or two lenses in a water and dust proof bag.
  • You’ll need at least 8x30 magnification strength binoculars to get in for a closer look.
  • Dress the part in a safari outfit by wearing neutral earth tones to blend in with the environment. Keep the weather in mind and dress accordingly.
  • A sturdy pair of hiking boots or walking shoes will help you get around comfortably.
  • Sunscreen, a sun hat and sunglasses are all essentials to protect you from the sun.
  • Don’t forget the bug spray!

Now that you’re ready, the hunt is on. Prepare to have your mind blown.
