  • Very Regimented Tour

Last month we went on a tour of Poland with Collette. It was a religious pilgrimage and we saw the most amazing churches and religious sites. Poland is a beautiful country and well worth the visit. However, this tour was way too programmed. We have been on a number of religious pilgrimages before, and none were so regimented. We had very little time to ourselves to explore and buy souvenirs. On previous pilgrimages with other companies, they always made sure we were taken to some great places to buy religious items to take home. 25 years later we still rejoice when we bring out the Nativity we bought in Bethlehem. I was hoping to buy a Polish hand carved Nativity. This tour promised free time including one full afternoon in Krakow that never materialized. Finally, on the next to last night we told our guide we were skipping the group activity and going on our own. That was not possible on the other days because we were dependent on the bus to get us back to our hotel. Lunch breaks were sometimes 45 minutes and we had to eat fast and not savor our food. We had private Masses every day which was very nice. Our 9 and 13 year old nephews looked forward to Mass every day in a different location. Very moving! Some days additional religious services, like Chaplets, were added to the schedule which used our free time. I recommend including daily Mass but not additional religious programming. This was our one trip to Poland and we would have liked a balanced view of the country including some of the secular sites. For instance, we would have loved to go to the Salt Mine just outside of Krakow. The hotels were nice; however, we had 3 rooms for family traveling together and they were not contiguously located as we had requested. This made for complicated logistics traveling with our young nephews. I told our guide a number of times that we wanted time to shop, etc. but she did not make it so. The tour in Warsaw was about 3 hours long. I would have cut that to an hour and a half and given us the time to explore Old Town Warsaw on our own. We're glad we went but the above mentioned issues lead to our "average" rating. :-)
