After almost two years of a lot of staycations and time to think about where to go next, 2022 is going to be a huge rebound year for travel. We are seeing a lot of bookings for 2022 and beyond as travellers are itching to get back on the road, and we are right there with you! We have learned a lot about what travellers are looking for with our return to travel and want to share some trends we are seeing for next year both at Collette and throughout the industry at large.

Deep Dives into America
In the face of unprecedented travel restrictions, American travellers really reveled in the opportunity to experience what lies in their own backyards in 2021, and that is continuing into next year, too!

Expedia just released their 2022 Travel Trends report, in which they utilized their own data and partnered up with a research firm. According to that report, 59 percent of Americans are planning a domestic trip in the next year. More than just getting out somewhere, though, these travellers are searching for a truly enriching experience, which Expedia referred to in their report as the GOAT mindset, or Greatest Of All Trips. What that means varies from traveller-to-traveller, but here are some really interesting numbers from that report:

·       40% of polled travellers said that in 2022, they want a unique culinary experience on their next trip

·       23% are looking for off-the-beaten-path experiences

·       32% are looking to cross a bucket list destination off their lists

If this resonates with you, here are two of our top selling tours right now that fit the bill:

Alaska’s Northern Lights

America’s Cowboy Country

Enjoy Time Outside
In the last year, trips that connected travellers with the great outdoors and wonders of nature were some of the most popular. According to a report from the World Travel & Tourism Council, that is set to remain a trend for 2022.

Both the WTTC report and the Expedia report said they expect travellers will continue gravitating to some beachy locales. In terms of domestic outdoor spots, Expedia reports that places like Orlando, Panama City, and Maui are top-searched destinations in the U.S. right now. While domestic outdoor trips are hot, there are also plenty of international destinations that celebrate nature that continue to be top performers. Along the lines of the beach destination, Costa Rica remains a top seller for us and across the industry for 2022, as does a destination with a cold, volcanic sand beach: Iceland!

The WTTC Trending in Travel report has some fascinating findings about outdoor travel in 2022:

·       70 % of travellers in the U.S. and more than 75% of European travellers are planning on visiting an outdoor destination in 2022

·       52% of travellers say they are more likely to take an outdoor trip now than they were prior to the pandemic

·       47% of polled travellers want to experience nature on their next trip
