Best Time for Travel Iceland's Magical Northern Lights
While just about any month is great to visit Iceland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Iceland’s Magical Northern Lights tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.
Winter: If snowy landscapes and the northern lights are what you’re after, then winter is the prime season to visit Iceland. Sure, it's cold and dark, and winter storms and road closures may be common, but with welcoming celebrations and festivities, and cozy coffeehouses, t's easy to warm up to Icelandic hospitality.
Spring: In spring, you can expect more hours of sunlight and thawing snow and ice, allowing you to explore the beautiful landscapes. In less-crowded March, you can still catch some of the winter activities, or even glimpse the northern lights.
Fall: Fall is a great time to see the northern lights in Iceland. September days can be bright and sunny, but the evening sky is dark enough for a beautiful aurora display. The temperature is slightly colder, but winter has yet to settle in, so the only snow you'll see is at the tops of the mountains in the distance. Iceland’s fall foliage puts on its own show, whether you’re walking in Reykjavik or hiking in the countryside.

We went to hunt the Northern Lights and we did get to see them. They don’t tell you that they’re not nearly as bright and luminous when seen with the naked eye. This tour is too rushed. There should be another day or two added to the schedule to fit everything in and have it be more relaxing, Also, I would have enjoyed a few more indoor experiences. There were only 2 on the trip and they were most enjoyable.

The tour manager and our bus driver were a great combination. They knew an incredible amount about Iceland beyond the natural wonders and places that we visited. The tour started with the Golden Circle. I loved walking through the rift valley where the continental shelves diverge even though we couldn’t actually see much due to wind-driven snow. The glacial snouts and lagoons further down the southeast coast were different from the glaciers and glacier lakes in the Canadian Rockies or Alaska.
My favorite event was sighting the Northern Lights. We had mostly clear nights, unusual for November. We saw a good display on the the second night of our trip.

My main purpose was to see the Northern Lights. The weather did not cooperate. Since I have been fortunate enough to tour many other sites, I have seen and walked on volcanoes, seen glaciers and blue glacier ice in 3 different locations, seen multitude of waterfalls in numerous trips to Hawaii and and this is my third location to see a geysir. With all this being said, the trip was just average for me. Plus the travel to get there included stressful air travel for me.

This was my 1st trip out of the country and since my family was going it was a trip of a lifetime, or so I thought. I missed a connecting Delta flight to Icelandicair in Boston, and had to stay over in Boston, and fly out the following night. The 1st night on the boat was the only night our tour group saw the northern lights and I was in Boston. He had so many special things for us, like getting to pet and feed an Icelandic horse, he passed out Icelandic candies and treats for us to try on the long rides, and was just a wealth of information about the history, the folklore, the country’s structure for healthcare, education, taxes and how they are used. He was just super! Vivi, the bus driver, was excellent as well, adding local information and help us to learn the pronunciations of words. We were sooo impressed with them and Collette! The tour itself was great. The guide, Mattias was so funny and personable. However, the literature provided by the local Collette office was inaccurate. The biggest selling point for this particular tour was the fact that we we're told we could get into our rooms upon arrival and all breakfasts and dinners were included. Nope. Both were lies. We were not allowed into the rooms;then we were allowed for a hefty fee, so not til 3pm were we allowed up. This was after the walking tour. The average age of the group was late 50's early sixties. The fact that the room would be available upon arrival was the biggest selling point. The tour itself was great as stated previously. We will not be using Collette in the future. This was a trial run to see if using a guided tour was for us. After this, I don't think so.

It was a well planned trip with exciting places to see. I liked hearing about their history and energy industry. We didn’t see the northern lights but that wasn’t Collettes fault. The Blue Lagoon was awesome. Everyone who had been there before me asks if I swam in it. Then we’re jokingly talk about how many years younger the white cream made us look. I clam not 10 but 20. I only gave 4 stars for a couple of reasons.
One is the flight! Collette did not allow us or did not themselves choose seats on the plane, but let the airlines assign us seats at last minute. Non of our group, incl spouse were seating together AND I was in the last row next to bathrooms! AND we booked a year in advance!!!
Second, I would never go to Iceland again in October! It rains almost all the time!! We never saw the Northern Lights the entire week. Some of that also has to do with the fact that going looking for them at night you only go like 10 min. from hotel! I would have driven an hour if there was an area, which there was, that I could have seen the lights.
However, the tour guides and the trip excursions were great! They went above and beyond to make our experience fun and memorable.

The tour of Iceland was a surprisingly enjoyable experience. I never thought I would like going on a tour- I always thought that I would miss the freedom of doing what I want. Collette has changed my mind!
What this tour had that single handily changed my mind was a superb tour guide. It was like taking a vacation with a college professor! I learned so much about the beautiful country of Iceland.
I know what it is like to be in charge of people and events and I felt like our tour guide was on top of everything.
Things I would change about the tour:
I wish that the hotel we stayed in for the bulk of the trip would have been in Vik or another town. Because of the weather we had quite a lot of downtime at that hotel and it would have been nice to have been able to browse the streets and go to local shops or pubs.
This is such a little thing but one that many of us on the tour struggled with and could have devastating ramifications. We couldn’t figure out how to open the door from the outside or inside of our hotel room in Vik. I know it sounds silly but we literally felt like we would be stuck in our room in an emergency. I only figured it out when I heard a dad explaining to his daughter how to do it.
Thank you Collette for introducing me to the beautiful country of Iceland!

They claimed they never received our original claim which was false since I sent the claim form by registered mail. Sunshine! When the sun was out, Iceland was beautiful! The moss on lava rock and mountains. It was difficult walking and visiting sites when the blowing snow and sleet pelted our faces. The sun shone when we visited Diamond Beach so needless to say, that was nice. It drizzled when we visited Black Sand Beech and we got our feet wet when a wave sneaked up on the beach where we walked. All an adventure!! Mario has a delightful personality, but I could not understand what he said 20% to 30% of the time due to his Italian accent. Collette advertised that the Tour Manager would be an expert on cultural and historical matters of the country. Either Mario did not know such information or he did not have the vocabulary in English to verbally relate the information. I am trying not to focus on the information which I was not provided but expected to receive as stated by Collette.

We were travelling from 7PM the night before, landed on a Sunday at 7AM and had to find breakfast on our own. The other problem was the walk from my room to breakfast was dangerous as thick ice was on the ground and it was dangerous to walk. Breakfast was served at 7AM and we slipped and skidded all the way.

Why did we have to walk a block to our bus at the airport? As I wrote in my critique I would pay $1,000 more for the trip to have better service. I doubt I would ever use Colette again. Fabulous tour guide and bus driver, great stops between Reykjavik and Vic, awesome photo opportunities and good hotels in both places. The one think that was not worth the money we paid for it, was the Icelandic Air flights. Very "NO FRILLS" and a rude crew on both flights. The pilot was not on time for the flight home and they made us stand in line - on a stairway - waiting for him. I'm 71 and didn't appreciate it. We were rudely talked to and the gate staff seemed fine with it. We didn't even get served coffee before arrival after our over night flight. Worst airline I've ever flown. The tour gets 5 stars, the airline - NONE.

I take at least one tour a year, usually to Europe. This tour was the perfect balance of activities for the climate. The beauty of Iceland is spectacular. The only thing the hotels had going for them was location, the food was average and the same every day and the rooms were bare bones, but clean and comfortable. Marco, the Tour Manager, ranks in my top 3 of all time. He managed us effortlessly with a great deal of humor. He has a very light touch.

Do to flight canceled I had to fly all day and night - then that night had to walk in freezing cold weather 3 or 4 blocks to a so so restaurant
mistake 1- I did not have my luggage out on time - I did not hear the person from the hotel knock on the door - **** had to come and pound on the door yelling at me to get my luggage out he was not happy that he had to come up to my room- rooms had no phones or clocks i did see other tour group given cell phones be the desk clerk
mistake 2 - on the tour I ask **** a question about the many horses I saw - would not answer He does NOT like questions
mistake 3- on Sunday I slipped and fractured my wrist - OK I am now on ***** nasty list.
Monday morning I was dumped in the parking lot of a clinic in Vik and left. Bus was gone before I even reached the door of the clinic. The clinic had no x ray machine. I had to call the hotel for a ride back to the hotel - they only serve breakfast and dinner - no lunch. told **** that I needed to get to a hospital for an x-ray. Tuesday after visit to blue lagoon and lunch I was again dumped in the parking lot this time of the hospital and left. this was about 4pm I was in the hospital for at least 5 hours and had to take a taxi back to the hotel no dinner no calls to check on how I was doing. never asked if I was OK. **** or the driver went into the lagoon i think I could have been dumped at the hospital much sooner and then be able to have wonderful dinner the rest of the tour enjoyed
**** said that he will put names up to show where we will be sitting on the bus so he would make sure we rotated the seats maybe for everyone else but after first day I was put in the very back and there I stayed.
My treatment from him was so wrong even the other people on the bus wondered why...
this is only part of what I think is mistreatment I received

The weather was really nice up to the day of departure when we got a bit of rain. Walking tours of town were informative, and the sights were spectacular throughout. I loved Sky Lagoon, Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, and all of the glaciers and waterfalls. Dinners in Reykjavik were good, especially the final night. CenterHotel Plaza was nice in spite of the construction. Hotel Dyrholaey was OK but some of it was showing some wear, especially carpets. The food there was OK. Oh, and before I forget, I also need to compliment Robert, our driver. He did an excellent job for us and was also a pleasure to talk to. The primary reason for our trip was to see the Northern Lights. They were not as spectacular as I expected, but then I suppose maybe I over-anticipated. We finally received the packet a few days before our flight from the US to Iceland. This left little time to prepare the appropriately. I will never do a Collette tour again. We had a problem with our flight in Philly. I know that’s not your problem. However, there was no guidance on what we were to do. We missed our flight in Iceland. Now we did not have an agent. At this point we really hadn’t gotten to know our other fellow travelers. When we got off the plane, my friend and I went right to American Airlines and they put us up at the Hilton overnight and gave us food vouchers, cause there was no food. We got there so late. Meanwhile, texting Colette and at this point, I guess everybody else on the trip was texting Colette but we got a notice saying just go to Icelandic tomorrow and everything’s taken care of. Well, when we got there, everything wasn’t taken care of. They did not have tickets for us. So now we’re calling Colette. And I guess because everybody was talking they did away with “if this is a travel emergency press one”. So of course we picked any number just to talk to somebody. When they put the message back on the phone, it was on a loop press one if this is a travel emergency, you press one and it went back on the loop press one if this is a travel emergency. Every time we talk to an agent, we were told their working on the problem. We’ll get back to you. Finally, we over heard someone from Icelandic airlines said the problem is the flight we had to take was more expensive than the flight that was missed. Someone finally got a hold of. Wendy from SUCS and they gave me the phone. I spoke with her, I told her about the scuttlebutt that I heard and she was like oh OK good to know and I’ll call you back. Five minutes later we were in the computer and we were able to board the plane. However, I can’t tell you how long this all took but we made it. When we finally arrived in Iceland, of course our agent wasn’t there because he was with a group that made it on the first flight. Now some of us are getting texts. Some of us are getting emails and we’re trying to figure out what to do and where to go.
We take a tour because of things like this that we don’t want to deal with, that’s why you have an agent, that’s why you book a tour. I could’ve very easily bought my own plane, tickets book my own room and not have half the hassles that I had with this. I lost a day, didn’t get to see this Capital at all. I did not like playing travel agent. I received no compensation. I don’t have trip insurance because this wasn’t my problem this was Colette‘s problem and they didn’t take care of it. Once we did get to Iceland, I have to say Patrick, our agent, was wonderful. He was your saving grace, but I will never go on a Collette tour again and I will never recommend Collectte Tours. I tell everyone this story, because you get home and everyone asks “how was your trip”. I have traveled to every continent except Antarctica and never have had a problem like I’ve had with Colette.Tours.

While the tour guide was excellent, the experience with Collette was terrible. When we missed our connecting flight to Iceland, Collette's emergency services phone line was poorly staffed and inadequately trained to provide support or direction to our group of 17. We had to fend for ourselves in Boston at very late hour where we ended up spending the night. There is only 1 evening flight to Iceland daily, and Collette improperly arranged our next day re-ticketing. We were left in another confused and chaotic situation for hours at the airport check in and fully expected to be returning home. At the last minute, they finally paid and issued our tickets. After the stress, disappointment, and lack of support we endured, Collette refused any reimbursement for our missed first tour day. After the tour, we received a letter apologizing for our experience but came up short in acknowledging any responsibility and offered no reimbursement. The quality of any company is judged in the personal attention and support that individuals receive when things don't go as planned. There will be plane delays and related glitches but the purpose of using a tour company is the benefit of travel experts to seamlessly navigate these issues. Collette sorely failed to meet this expectation.

The itinerary was wonderful and the countryside is beautiful. The trip was really nice.... BUT I would recommend taking it in Oct-Dec or Mar. Our trip was in Feb and the weather made it impossible for us to see "The Lights" which was disappointing. Our tour guide moved the itinerary around to make it possible for us to do as much as we could despite the weather, however the snow and wind was a deterrent. Overall, we enjoyed the adventure.

If tour manager means the one based in Reykjavik, he was excellent. Best tour manger ever. Darko was his name. The problem I had with the tour is the “inclusions” we did not enjoy because of weather. We had a cruise canceled because of the weather on the first night and a rescheduled cruise canceled on the last night. All nightly trips to find dark skies to see the Northern lights were canceled. A trip to a glacier was canceled. And a trip to the Blue Lagoon was canceled. At one point we were stuck in our hotel for 25 hours because of the weather. Just the week before we left we learned that everything was canceled because of high winds also. Then to top it off the local tour manager in Chattanooga (who was not on the trip) said this in an email “”Well, I heard the weather was not very cooperative, in Iceland. For that, I’m really sorry. It is the chance we take when traveling to Iceland in February.”” Being a risk averse person, I would really have like to have known the “risk” I was taking by going in February. Please publish data on how often things are canceled and how often groups never see the Northern Light, the attraction that had top billing on your brochure. A far as Collette’s role they did the best they could under the circumstances. It would have been very enjoyable if the weather cooperated.

Our favorite memorable experience was made even richer and more enjoyable because of our excellent tour guide, Antonjia, who was a great story teller, immersing us and teaching us, not only about Iceland as an island geographically, but as a people with a rich heritage and culture. She made us fall in love with the people, their culture and their land. That is why our most memorable event was even more impactful when we joined the locals of Vik on New Year’s Eve for a bonfire and fireworks by the black beach. It felt like a school tour and the same with the grass roof houses that kind of thing doesn’t interest me. I’m there to be outside and see the beauty of the country. We we loved the black beaches and Vic was a good location because we didn’t have to travel so far to see things. I personally would love to be up in the country and take a long horseback ride, but that’s just me. Although it worked because I wanted an adventure and our group was great, we lost outdoor opportunities because of gale force winds and sideways blowing rain, lack of visibility for the sky and just not wanting to get out and get soaked for a short view of a wet waterfall to get in the fall. The Proper wet weather clothing was possible, but not the constant experience I had in mind. The tour was very good, the tour guide, Kristin was inclusive and very helpful. The entire trip to Iceland was incredible! Beautiful scenic countryside and the capital city was very interesting to walk around. Loved seeing the Northern Lights and the gorgeous waterfalls and glacier area! Our walking tour guide was friendly and engaging, as was the docent in the folk museum, and lava center! The people of Iceland are very friendly, knowledgeable, kind, and work to make a visitor feel welcome!

The Northern Lights were amazing! We were fortunate to see them one time.
Madeline Hern did a great job educating us and pointing out various things. She is knowledgeable and very pleasant. We enjoyed our time with her. It would have been nice to have a list of suggestions for things to do on the free days. Overall it was a great experience!

Our biggest complaint was that the your group was 43 people. That is NOT a SMALL group. Just getting on and off the bus took twice as long as any groups we have traveled with. It was a MOB when ever we went into a restaurant or had restroom breaks. Groups should not be over the mid twenties. Our group manager did a wonderful job trying to keep things going smoothly in spite of the unwieldy numbers of people . We enjoyed everything we did and saw.

We enjoyed the Iceland Magical Northern Lights tour. We do have misgivings on being placed in hotels where we are required to collect our travel bags from the buses and walk several blocks to the hotels to check in. We are required to do the same thing upon checking out. This is very inconvenient, hard for senior citizens and terrible during inclement weather.
We have enjoyed travelling with Collette but are considering looking for a different tour provider that does not place us in hotels that require us to walk long distances carrying our travel bags.

The only things that I did not like was moving seats on the bus and also the food for breakfast could of been better, choices for dinner could of been a bit better and no clocks in rooms, but the sights and people were what you could hope for and than some.

They only thing I really did not like was that I did not like changing seats on the bus each day. I totally understand your reason, but many people really much ratter stay at the original seats. I do get car sick, so I pick a seat that will be best as possible for me.

Great experience! Well planned tour with so many beautiful sights to see. Iceland is such a unique place. From glaciers to volcanos to beaches to geysers, the natural beauty is amazing. And we were able to see the northern lights three different nights!

I can cross something off my bucket list. We saw the northern lights on two nights, it was amazing to see it with your eyes, but enhanced when you took a picture of it. Bonus - breathtaking waterfalls, glacier bay, ice diamonds on the black sand beach, volcanos, and sky lagoon. Our tour manager Antonja was the best with her personal touches and knowledge.

Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate to see the northern lights but it was still a fantastic tour. The spa at Sky Lagoon was the best part. Thoroughly enjoyed the spa. Our tour guide, Fillipo was outstanding and he did a wonderful job explaining not only the sights we saw but a lot about the Icelandic culture. Overall it was an amazing experience and would highly recommend this tour.

The tour was beyond my expectations. Filippo and Matt worked together to ensure our tour went beyond our expectations. The restaurants and food were amazing. We were given enough time to explore and just enjoy every minute. The pre-trip review helped us to be well prepared. Thank you!
