Know Before You Go: Africa

Don’t Skip the African Safari Tours

We’ve been curating safari adventures in Africa since 1993. Spanning these decades are rich relationships and expert designers and guides who live in the region. The result: access to experiences you’d be hard-pressed to find on your own. If you’re hoping to see some wildlife, a guided African Safari tour just makes sense.

The Top African Destinations to Visit

Africa offers breathtaking destinations, from Tanzania’s Serengeti and Victoria Falls in Zambia/Zimbabwe to the ancient alleyways and medinas of Morocco. Explore Cape Town for urban coastal beauty, the Namib Desert for otherworldly landscapes and towering dunes, Chobe National Park in Botswana for its biodiversity…the list goes on — it just depends on what you want to experience.

When to Visit Africa

Timing your African adventure is key. May to September brings peak wildlife action in Southern Africa, as animals converge around scarce water sources. June to October is prime for East Africa’s Great Migration, a spectacle in Kenya and Tanzania. For vibrant landscapes and fewer crowds, November to April offers stunning birdwatching and Victoria Falls at its most dramatic. Spring and fall are ideal in Morocco for sightseeing and urban exploration. If you’re planning an African safari tour, read more about the best time to travel to Africa on our blog.

Thank goodness we had capable bus drivers that gave us all the information for the different areas. Our tour manager, Claudia, did not have knowledge, experience or expertise in any area concerning a tour management.

This tour was an excellent experience. The tour was entertaining and educational at the same time. Our tour guide knew his stuff! He anticipated many of our requests. He seemed to be one step ahead of us the entire tour. The Safari guides were very professional. They found the Big Five for us as well as many additional animals. It was amazing how well they did finding the things we wanted to see. The Zambesi River cruise was breath taking.

So memorable experiences: from the magnificence of Victoria Falls to the stunning scenery in the game reserves and down the coast to Cape Point. And of course, not forgetting the many wildlife sightings. Our tour guide manager was excellent: knowledgeable, friendly, personable, well organized. This trip gives you an overview of three countries in the southern part of the African continent.

Great safari’s. Tour director and safari drivers were wonderful. We saw the big 5 plus the Great Migration. We had great cultural experiences. We got very close to elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, leopards, etc but yet always felt safe. The tents and lodges were nice, and the food was good. I had friends on a different (more expensive) safari tour in Tanzania at the same time, but in comparing notes and photos, they saw so much less than we did. I highly recommend Collette for the Kenya and Tanzania tour. We did the Masai Mara pre tour extension and are glad we did! It was fantastic. Go now, as Africa is changing.

Such a ibcredible vacation! Our driver, Moses, was amazing. He safely navigated the roads of Kenya and the reserves while answering all of our questions about the animals and the country. We saw every animal we hoped to see including babies of almost every variety. It was a an experience that I will never forget and would recommend for everyone to experience at some time in their life. Collette did a great job organizing an fabulous tour with great lodging and food, fun experiences, and so many animals!

Loved the majority of the trip. Cold have skipped the Jardin Majorelle. We wound up sitting and waiting to leave for40-45 mintes. The musem was interesting but descriptions were in French so couldn't read . Would have liked to spend more time in the medina shopping the different alleys. The co-op we were taken to was okay but didn't have what I was looking for and didn't have the local interaction. I would definately recommend this trip, and I have to numerous friends. I would go back.

Rahima, our tour guide, was fantastic and everything was. seamless. Our drivers and Safari guides were also very good. The highlights were Victoria Falls, all of the Safari’s in Pilanisburg and Chobe, a helicopter ride was fun and drive through Cape of Good Hope beautiful. Enjoyed the dinners at the host families the outdoor picnic at Ivory tree Lodge, the Gold celebration in Cape Town. I was disappointed with Colette in the booking process. I received such a slow response I booked airfare myself ant a time when the fares were rising every few days. Also needed help with our flight from Cape Town. That was caceled till next day very little help from Colette. Prefer to not have the mandatory stop at the diamond store in Cape Town.

Everything was well organized. Andrew Penn was friendly and knowledgeable. We loved the game drives the most. Seeing the lioness swim across the river toward our truck and her 4 cubs reluctantly following her was the best. We also loved seeing the male leopard strolling up the road toward our truck on the last morning.

The main tour was great! The extension to Dubai was not great. The tour guide “Sam” was only “so-so”, always in a rush! For the main trip we loved everything, the wildlife, the safari rides, Cape Town, the accommodations, all great, EXCEPT the one night in Johannesburg, That hotel was terrible.

Africa Tour FAQs

The best time depends on the region and activities. North Africa is ideal in spring (April–June) and autumn, avoiding extreme heat and cold. East Africa is best from September to January for coastal activities and July or October for the Great Migration. Southern Africa offers great travel conditions from November to March, perfect for city exploration and safaris.

Routine vaccines like MMR, polio, and hepatitis A & B are recommended. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into certain countries. Other recommended vaccines include typhoid, rabies, meningococcal disease, and cholera, depending on your destination.

Africa has many safe destinations, especially for group tours, which offer structured itineraries and local expertise. Research destinations, follow local advice, and opt for reputable tour operators for a secure experience.

Visa requirements vary by country. South Africa, Botswana, and Morocco allow visa-free entry for U.S. travelers for up to 90 days. Other countries, like Egypt, require a visa on arrival or e-visa. Always check specific entry requirements before traveling.

Pack light, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and sun protection. Essentials include a filtered water bottle, mosquito repellent, and a neck wallet for valuables. Camouflage patterns should be avoided as only the military wear this. Research local customs to dress appropriately.

Choose eco-friendly lodges, support local businesses, and respect wildlife. Avoid unethical activities like animal exploitation and opt for community-based tourism. Companies like Collette promote sustainable travel, ensuring your visit benefits local communities and conservation efforts.

The minimum age restriction for Collette's African safari tours is 13.

Providing your Tour Manager with your specific dietary restrictions in advance will ensure that the camps, lodges, and restaurants included throughout the tour will accommodate your needs.
