The natural splendours found in the simple village of Zermatt are truly magnificent. The monolith that is the Matterhorn is likely the most impressive and noteworthy, but there are several surrounding sites that are worth a visit should you have time.
Matterhorn
A world-famous symbol of the Swiss Alps, the Matterhorn is an astounding sight to see. Hop aboard the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and ascend to the clouds as you get a whole new view of this impressive peak. If you have time, be sure to visit the Glacier Palace, an ice palace filled with sparkling ice sculptures.
Gorner Gorge
See how the Ice Age has aided in creating this natural wonder. Explore the waterfalls of the gorge as you walk along wooden walkways weaved into this chasm. This is a spellbinding site that’s worth a visit while in Zermatt.
Theodul Glacier
Discover this impressive Alpine glacier located in the canton of Valais. Ride a cable car from Zermatt and ascend to the snowy Breithorn Plateau. We recommend taking a glacier tour with a guide if you’re up for a bit of a hike!
Schwarzsee Lake
If you wish to hike along the Matterhorn, we think this is the spot where you should start. Enjoy a picnic by this scenic lake to take in its impressive beauty before ascending to the mountainous peaks that surround this body of water. Among the natural sites, this is another great point of interest.

After a day of exploring the Matterhorn and the Swiss Alps, you’re bound to be a bit peckish. If you desire some Swiss cuisine, your local guide can tell you what spots offer the best food and drink. Here are some popular favorites.
Chez Vrony
Take the trek to this tasty Swiss eatery and cure any hunger pains that might ail you. Access Chez Vrony by taking a ride in the Sunnegga Express funicular, then take a short 15 minute hike. If you’re feeling famished, we recommend ordering the epic Vrony burger.
Bayard Metgerei
If you don’t want to slow down to get a bite to eat, then step in line at this famed butcher shop for a street-side grilled sausage. Sit down and enjoy with a frosty beer or continue to wander through Zermatt’s charming streets. This is a delicious portable food option.
Hennu Stall
Visit this lively bar and enjoy a drink while you revel in the awesome beauty of the Matterhorn. Mingle with those who’ve hit the slopes and listen to some great live music on the terrace. Our guests’ drink of choice here was the sweet caramel vodka.
Le Gitan – Zermatterstübli
For something a bit more upscale, head to this well-appointed restaurant and enjoy fine Swiss dining. Marvel in the elegant chalet-style interior and nibble on cheese fondue alongside fresh truffles. Wash it all down with a bubbly glass of champagne.
Attractions
While in Zermatt, it’s hard not to spend a good portion of your time gazing in wonder at the Matterhorn. However, you’ll find plenty of attractions to keep your interest in this Swiss village piqued. We suggest checking out some of these sites.
St. Mauritius Church
Visit this historic Italian style church, and discover the beautiful 18th century altar found in the centre. All are welcome to enter this simple religious site and stay for a service if you are so inclined.
Matterhorn Museum
See how people in generations past trekked the Matterhorn and immerse yourself in a staged archeological excavation called “Zermatlantis.” This interactive museum allows you to see how mountaineers triumphed but also were defeated by the epic Matterhorn. This hands-on museum is a great way to get even better acquainted with this stunning peak.
Mountaineers' Cemetery
Pay homage to the lives that were lost on the Matterhorn and revel in the true power of Mother Nature with a visit to this tranquil memorial. Dating from the 19th and 20th century, the Mountaineers’ Cemetery is a testament to how treacherous the Matterhorn can be. Take a quick moment of silence and pay a visit this site while in Zermatt.
Ricola Herb Garden
See where the soothing Swiss herb drops originate and take a walk through the Ricola Herb Garden. You’re encouraged to rub, sniff, and taste the plants as a local guide explains the healing properties of each leafy species. This is another fun hands-on excursion for those looking for a unique experience.
