Lifting the fog on Portugal’s pretty Tamega River valley

Morning fog hovers over the valley when Rui, our tour manager, says: “There’s actually a river down there.”

We had been enjoying our scenic coach journey in the countryside of northern Portugal when the visibility levels plummeted. Verdant pastures, arable fields and hillsides matted with oak, olive, pine and eucalyptus trees kept our eyes glued to the windows as we journeyed into the mountainous Minho region inland from Porto.

But with the fog lingering, our attention focuses instead on Rui’s informative commentary. Clutching his microphone, he’s explaining the history and geography of this valley by the Tamega River (a tributary of the more famous Douro).
