How to Pack with Just a Carry-On

I packed for my three-week honeymoon with one carry-on suitcase. And if I can do it, anyone can. I love my accessories, getting dressed up, and looking my best, especially when I’m doing my favorite thing: traveling the world. You’d think that packing light for a big trip is impossible, right? Well, it’s not as hard as you might imagine.

Here are my top tips for maximizing space and styling staples to travel light while looking good:

  • Fit more into a smaller suitcase by rolling your clothes (it really works) or using packing cubes, which definitely help fit more into a limited space.
  • Bring a pair of black pants. Everything goes with black pants, so they’re a wardrobe staple. No one will know that you’re wearing the same pair!
  • This brilliant advice is straight from J.Crew and I live by it: make eight outfits from four things: a skirt, shirt, pants, and scarf. Choose pieces in classic colors, then mix and match. Accessorize with that scarf (or two) and you’ll always have a fresh take on your wardrobe.
  • Accessories such as a thin scarf, headband, or foldable hat add a pop of flair to any outfit and don’t take up much room.
  • Shoes – remember, you don’t need heels on vacation, even at a nice dinner. So, the question is, black or brown? Choose the color that best complements your travel wardrobe and work with that for the entire trip.
  • Favor solid colors over patterns. It’s easy to tell when you’ve repeated an outfit if you’re wearing a top with florals, plaids, or logos. Stick with solids and add a unique touch with accessories.
  • Dresses are great, especially in warmer climates. Pick a comfortable dress that can create two looks – casual explorer by day, and sophisticated local by night (with the addition of some jewelry and a brighter lipstick).

All packed and ready to go? With all that extra room in your luggage, you’re set to load up on souvenirs.
