Being equal parts fashion and function, sunglasses are a must-have when packing for travel. Sunglasses aid in the onset of cataracts, slow the development of wrinkles around your eyes, and keep you safe from glare while driving. Plus, the right pair can be the just the right way to complete your overall look for the day. When picking out new sunglasses it’s important to find a pair that provides the right amount of protection, style and durability. Here are some tips on what to look for when shopping for shades that best keep the rays at bay.

UV Protection

Guarding yourself against harmful UVA and UVB rays isn’t just important for your skin, it’s also important for your eyes. While some sunshine is great, too much can cause issues like cataracts, destroy your retinas, and lead to skin cancer. Eye doctors suggest looking for sunglasses that block out 99 to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays.If the pair you find doesn’t meet this requirement, don’t waste your money.

In addition to being unflattering, an ill-fitting pair of sunglasses can be unhealthy for your eyes.Find a pair that will fit snugly on your face, lines up with your brow, and doesn’t quite hit your eyelashes. A well-fitted pair of lenses helps block out the UV rays and also keeps allergens away from your eyes, another benefit of donning shades.

Check the Lens Quality

While many sunglasses have added features like polarization and an array of colors, it is best to look for a uniform tint. Don’t opt for a pair if there is a gradient or if one part of the lens is darker than the other. To evaluate the quality of the lenses, hold the glasses at arm’s length and then look through them at a straight line in the distance. Slowly move the lens across the line. If the straight edge distorts, sways, curves or moves, the lens is flawed.

Sunglasses are a great way to be healthy and stylish. Make sure it’s one of your main travel accessories on your next sunny voyage!
