Each year on the 10th of August, we celebrate the “king of the jungle” on World Lion Day. This day offers a great opportunity to learn more about these majestic big cats and the conservation efforts in place to keep lions from becoming endangered.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature currently lists the lion as being in a vulnerable status, which is one step above endangered. There are estimated to be fewer than 25,000 lions left in the wild with that number on the decrease. The wellbeing and survival of these animals are so important to us, which is why we partnered with industry experts in an animal welfare audit to assure we are providing positive animal interactions for guests and creatures alike on our tours.

While you’re waiting to get started on the search for lions, here are some fun facts about the iconic Panthera leo:
Social Butterfly
Lions travel in packs of three to 40 lions and are the most social cats in the wild. They rear their young together, travel together, and even talk together – roaring together to communicate!
Loud Mouth
Lions roar to communicate within their pack, but also to claim their territory to any intruders! Comparable to a lightning crack, a lion’s roar can be heard up to 5 miles away.
Spot the Cub
A lion’s sandy yellow coat covering its long, muscled body started off with spots! Cubs are born with spots and sometimes light stripes. These fade as they grow into adulthood.
Snoozing on Safari
They don’t call them cat naps for nothing! Lions are most active at night with minimal sweat glands and can be found laying low or napping during the day. Adult male lions can sleep up to 20 hours a day!
