While just about any month is great to visit Italy, there are a few prime times of the year for the Italian Vistas tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.
Throughout Italy, the most popular times to visit are April, May, June, September, and October. Along the coast, July and August are busy with locals and Europeans on summer holiday, while cities are usually less crowded.
Winter: Go in December, January, and February for Venice, where you can take a walk beside the canals on a quiet evening and hear your footsteps echoing off the water. Catch the holiday spirit in festive Sorrento or in Naples, renowned for elaborate, handcrafted nativity scene statuettes.
Spring: Before summer’s crowds, spring is a great season to visit Sorrento and the Isle of Capri. Despite occasional rainy weather, the quieter time of year is very enjoyable for sightseeing. At Lake Maggiore, attractions such as the Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella can still be closed for the season, but there is no shortage of opportunities to soak in the area’s beauty.
Fall: After the busy summer season, you’ll encounter more of the locals from October on. Fall is a fantastic season to travel in Tuscany, with fewer crowds, cooler days, and a bit of foliage to enjoy – all pairing well with a glass of red wine!

$75.00 pp
Experience the romance that can only be found in Venice – La Serenìssima – while traveling on its famous waterways. Partake in one of Venice’s most famous pastimes, a gondola cruise. Take a pleasant stroll toward the Grand Canal to board your gondola. As you relax in your elegant watercraft, your gondolier navigates the Grand Canal as well as smaller side canals. Admire the scenery as you listen to the melodic voice serenading you in true Italian style, just like in those romantic Italian movies!
The Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica
Day 4 | Rome
$99.00 pp
The Vatican Museums are not only home to one of the world’s greatest collections of art, but also to the world-famous Sistine Chapel. Priceless artifacts from ancient Egypt, Etruscan Italy, and cultures around the world are preserved in the Vatican’s palaces, galleries, halls, and rooms. Follow a local expert guide on a three hour, in-depth visit through this vast collection. Highlights include the Gallery of Maps, the Gallery of Tapestries and, of course, a visit to the Sistine Chapel. The chapel’s famous ceiling frescoes took Michelangelo four years to complete. His brilliant Last Judgment, which rests on the altar wall, was a topic of controversy for centuries. Other walls feature paintings by Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Cosimo Rosselli, and Domenico Ghirlandaio. Your final stop will be at St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the most important churches in Christendom, and until recently, the largest in the world.
Trastevere Food Tour
Day 4 | Rome
$120.00 pp
Follow your expert guide on an engaging tour of Rome’s more epicurean side. Your culinary journey takes place in the bohemian Trastevere district, where medieval architecture meets ivy-clung houses and the lively chatter from the many eateries sprinkled through the neighborhood echoes off the cobblestone streets. Partake in the local tradition of aperitivo (pre-dinner drink) before tasting your way through Rome’s most representative street food, such as supplì (fried rice balls) and pastas. Top off your culinary exploration with a taste of artisanal gelato and learn how to tell a good one from a factory-made, ensuring you never eat a bad one again!

Not enough time at major attractions, such as the Coliseum, Pompeii, Michelangelo’s David. We were not able to go into the accompanying museums. The “tours” of the pasta factory, vineyards and Murano glass were poorly diguised sales events offering little education. The included lunches and dinners were poor quality with no selection options. Some of the local tour guides were informative other gave a cursory overview. Most of the accommodations were 4 star which included sufficient breakfast menus. The bus was very comfortable. Our tour guide and driver excellent. . For the price, this tour was disappointing. I would not recommend it considering the number of similar tour offerings currently available.

The tour was comprehensive, however, the accommodations, especially in Sorrento were not 4-star as advertised, especially if you are a single. I paid 1-1/2 x a "double" and was put in the noisiest areas of each hotel. Alleys that adjoin the restaurant so you have carts over cobblestones from 5 am to midnight, rooms that were obviously used for staff behind the front desk and 10 ft from the street, a room next to the employee office that conducted 5 am phone calls at the top of his lungs, and a room over the smoking area.

I loved seeing the history, architecture, paintings, but most of all seeing the people and the culture of Italy. The food was wonderful!!!
They were some things I would like improved.
For the Positano option, include a local guide to give insight on what to see in Positano, give some history on the town. It also would have been nice to have more time and something to actually do in Positano- a cooking lesson, a gelato making lesson, etc. It was beautiful, but we had no guidance and not enough time there.
On the extension to Milan, our first guide, Augusta, basically gave our tour, which was great, then left us to get back to the hotel on our own. We had to ask her to at least give us directions for the train going back and make sure we were on the correct one. We didn’t expect to be left in the middle of Milan with no direction whatsoever.
The hotels were great, near to shopping, restaurants, etc. Some of the rooms were super small with not much room to place suitcases and belongings.

While I would have liked to go more in-depth for the sights in some of the locations, like entry into some of the cathedrals, there just wasn't time. I was able to enter a couple on the free-time though. I would like to return someday with one of the more region-specific tours. My wife and I chose to not do the gondola ride in Venice but to use the time to enter St. Marks. The optional Roman Serenade was just not worth the $110 per person. Thanks only to our tour manager's add-on walking tour in Trastevere, the experience was not a total bust.

The reason why I didn’t give 4 or 5 stars were because the food was really bad. Meals were not served hot!. The second reason was that I missed my flights both for the departure and the return. I didn’t know whose fault that was but we didn’t receive the info package for the departure at had a very stressful time at the check in and had to pay a travel agency at the airport for help and missed our flight. Christian tried to get a better view for us at next hotel but not successfully. So finally the last of 5 hotels we had a view of the side street of hotel. Not bad but could have been much better experience. Christian was wonderfully supportive but these things need to be Pinter out to hotels in advance
Obviously we all pay the same snd some toons were AAA’s SOME WERE F’s
Overall the other parts of trip were great and Christian made it even better.

1. Our tour manager was top notch! He was kind, thoughtful, improvised as needed, and took care of special and unforeseen circumstances with grace. He was interesting and entertaining when sharing information about Italy. His recommendations on restaurants and things to do on personal time were spot on. 2. Our accommodations were outstanding (I only rated as “good” due to the hotel in Sorrento, which wasn’t awful but there were several things that keep it from being excellent. Note that this was a change from the original hotel we were supposed to stay in which was under renovation - all other hotels were perfect!). 3. The majority of the tour inclusions were excellent but on a personal level, I felt the Murano tour was a waste of time. The demonstration did not show anything other than regular glass blowing and the items were all too expensive to purchase. I would have rather spent those four hours exploring Burano or more of Venice.

The selection of cities and towns on this tour gave us a wonderful overall view of the country, from central Rome to southern Serrento & Capri then up north to Venice, Verona and Stresa. I would wholeheartedly recommend this tour. This was our first bus tour and has set the bar for any future tours. And lest I forget, the tour bus was first rate and our driver, Carmello was excellent at manuvering through the narrow streets and lanes in some locations. This tour also afforded us the opportunity to see some off the beaten path attrations like the past factory tour and lunch and the vinyard winery tour and tasting. This is a good tour to take if you want to see a good portion of Italy and get to know a little bit about each region we visited. I prefer this type of tour the first time I visit a country. I can then go back and spend more time in a particular region that I favored. At times it felt surreal that I was in a place that I have read about and seen in pictures. I recommend signing up for all the optional excursions. They did not disappoint. The tour manager, Giulio, is extremely knowledgeable about Italy’s history and architecture . He offered recommendations as to where to eat and what to see when we were on our own. Every place he recommended was amazing! I would say the hotels are 2-3 star hotels. They are very old buildings with various quirkiness. Some had doors that were difficult to open, others didn’t have windows in the room and others had showers that were so small I kept bumping my elbows on the glass walls. But with that being said, I knew I would only be staying in a particular hotel for 2 nights so I could deal with each quirkiness! Overall, if you’re thinking about taking this tour, do it! You won’t be disappointed.

It was an amazing trip! We got to see so many things and not needing to worry about transportation was amazing. It was literally a stress free trip because everything was done for us. The balance of planned activities and free time was wonderful because it allowed us time to explore on our own.
Some of the tours with the local guides felt a little rushed. For example, in Pompei there seemed to be a lot we didn’t see. That is the give and take you get with going on a guided tour, however. If those tours had taken longer, it would have cut into the free time that was built in. The bottom line for me is that we got to see amazing things and had no stress or concerns about how to make it happen because Collette did that for us. We are already trying to decide what Collette trip we are booking next.
Oh, one last comment is regarding our tour manager, Sergio. He was absolutely amazing!!!!! We actually asked him if he does tours in other European countries because we would let that determine where we go next. He was incredible!!

Our tour manager, Daniel Luna, was excellent. He provided great background information about the places we visited. We had four outstanding local guides: Gabrielle for the Vatican City tour; Sylvia in Florence; Bernadette for Pompeii; and Willie for Capri. Our guide for Florence, Sylvia, was by far the best; her knowledge about it's history and influence on the world made Florence one of our favorite locations. Our first hotel, Grand Fleming Hotel in Rome, was OK. As part of a group of 12, we arrived for a pre-extension and the reception staff was totally unprepared because the head reception person insisted our reservation was for Apr 18, not Apr 17. Our group showed all the paperwork from Collette before the head receptionist finally agreed to allocate rooms. The hotel provided a secure area for our luggage while we waited for our rooms. The Welcome dinner at this hotel was a disappointment. The menu was a a prosciutto & cheese starter, penne pasta in a bland tomato sauce, and a thin slice of Tira Misu. The buffet breakfast was a struggle to find a place to sit and get food. The biggest detractor about this hotel was the location. It cost 70€ for taxi trips. The pasta lunch on Day 3 was forgettable. We liked the scope of the tour and the hotel accommodations improved after Rome. This was our third Collette tour and first & probably last Classic style. Large group of 40 people is not for us. We will stick with Exploration style tours

I made a short notice(30)day reservation for my daughter and great granddaughter to view Italy that I had visited with Collette 24 years ago. The helpfulness of Collette staff was fantastic to make this quick vacation possible. With 46 guests are Guide had his mettle tested but he came out with flying colors. Dino's knowledge of local and world history from his home in war time Bosnia to Ukraine today was outstanding and meaningful to all. He handled adversity well and I thank you for all your extra effort!.

My summer vacation with Collette Tours. Fun being the 12 year old mascot wearing my new yellow hat with moveable ears. Helped crowd see where guide was going. Guide was patient, polite, helpful and tall. Loved all the friendship from adults on the bus and sightseeing. I'll never forget Italy and Switzerland.

This tour was a great fast-paced overview of Italy.

The tour manager is very well organized, knowledgeable, courteous and funny. He was the star of the trip. The accommodations were excellent, in central locations, very convenient and comfortable, good ac and bathroom.
The return flight info were wrong and we showed at the gate after our flight was gone.

Too many to list. But you are not asking for the negatives. I would say the overall dirty environment in historic Rome was a disappointment. Walking throughout the trip could be hazardous. The time in the Sistine Chapel was so uncomfortable. I did not feel that the space was safe for tourists in case of a fire or panic. Too many people were crowded into the space and there was only one small exit open for people. That situation is dangerous and should not be allowed.
